Eight people died in traffic crashes in Missouri during the July 4th holiday period, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
That’s down from last year’s Independence Day period when 15 people were killed on Missouri’s highways. This year’s fatal crashes happened in Taney, Monroe, Pike, Adair, Newton, Chariton, Maries, and St. Louis counties. The victims include a Colorado man who was struck by an automobile while he was riding a bicycle on U.S. Highway 24 in Chariton County near Keytesville.
There were no boating deaths but a 60-year-old man from Kansas drowned Saturday in southwestern Missouri’s Stockton Lake.
The Highway Patrol also said 159 people were injured in traffic crashes across the state, and 147 were arrested for driving while intoxicated. The numbers are preliminary and could change as more information comes in.
