Henry County Sheriff’s Office Update: Incident Involving Missing Hounds – September 7, 2024
We would like to address the recent situation involving the missing hounds during the annual field trial held by the Henry County Fox & Beagle Hound Club. We understand the deep emotional connection many have with our dogs and the concerns raised. We also want to provide clear facts about the incident and the response from law enforcement.
On September 7, the Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the organizer of the event, located at 295 NE 681 Rd., Clinton. The organizer reported that six hounds, equipped with GPS trackers, went off the designated property while following a track. Two of the dogs were last seen near a private residence and land in the 5000 block of V Hwy, Calhoun. The remaining hounds’ GPS tracks indicated they were near the same area, dispersed across different properties.
Law enforcement responded and, after speaking with the property owner, we were granted permission to search his property. Our deputies used a UTV to check the areas where the two hounds were last tracked. No evidence of the hounds or any signs of wrongdoing were found.
It’s important to clarify that the property owner cooperated with law enforcement. At this time, we have no probable cause or reason to believe that a crime has been committed. Additionally, under the Fourth Amendment, we must respect the rights of property owners, and there is currently no legal basis for a search warrant.
As law enforcement, we must uphold the law, which protects all individuals’ rights, including property rights, as well as ensure due process for everyone involved.
We deeply understand the frustration and heartache caused by the loss of these hounds. They are not just hounds, but beloved members of our families. We want to personally express our heartfelt sympathy to the owners and everyone involved.
In the meantime, we ask the community for continued support. If anyone in the area spots a hound, please contact the Sheriff’s Office or the number on the dog’s collar. Below are pictures of three of the missing hounds: #14, #15, and #432. If you recognize or spot any of these dogs, please reach out immediately.
