October 27 was the 31st anniversary of “The Little Apple”, which began in 1993 by the A. C. Economic Development as way of informing residents of news and events sponsored by area businesses and organizations. Items of a clearly personal nature, such as birthdays, anniversaries, awards (not group sponsored), personal sales and the like are not accepted for publication. The Appleton City Industrial Development Committee would like to thank the citizens of the area for their support over the last 31 years. They would also like to thank the volunteers who help make this newsletter possible. Community First Bank and their employees who photocopy the issues each and every week and the many contributors who have donated the funds to purchase the paper it is printed on. We would especially like to offer special thanks to the volunteers who collate and deliver the Apple each week. The Little Apple is truly a worldwide newsletter, being sent by email to people interested in A. C. all over the world. If you would like to subscribe (or unsubscribe) to the Little Apple by email, please send your email address to dcp81@embarqmail.com. If you are willing to donate a few hours of your time each month to help with distributing this newsletter, please contact Dr. Don Payton at 476-2197.

As cattle producers prepare for winter, nutritional management and hay feeding are important topics. Depending on availability of forage resources some cattle producers may be meeting animal nutrient needs with new supplement strategies. Since hay and supplementation are expensive, efficient utilization to meet animal nutrient needs is important to profitability of a cattle operation. Previous years of drought and continued dry weather this year has stressed pastures. This leads to pastures that will need renovation or other management strategies to improve the forage base in the coming years. There are management strategies that can be implemented in the winter and early spring to help improve the forage base and cattle grazing potential next year. MU Extension wants to educate cattle producers and farmers to help them to manage their cattle and pastures through the winter months to be successful in the coming year. Therefore, Patrick Davis MU Extension Livestock Field Specialist and Micah Doubledee MU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist, will be holding a winter cattle feeding and pasture management workshop at the Lamar First Baptist Church, 1301 East 6th Street, Lamar, MO 64759 on November 12 at 6:00 p.m. There will be a free meal provided at the meeting due to the support of Arvest Bank. The meeting is free, but registration is required by November 8 at https://shorturl.at/1ZVB6 or by contacting the Barton County MU Extension Center at (417) 682-3579. For all other questions contact Davis at (417) 276-3313 or by email at davismp@missouri.edu.
