
A violent tornado struck Spencer, SD. The F4 wedge damaged or destroyed much of the town, killing six people and injuring 150 others. A DOW recorded wind gusts in the vortex as high as 220 mph. This event is one of South Dakota’s deadliest tornadoes. After storms in the Northern Plains went upscale, a major derecho formed and tore eastward. It traveled over the Midwest & Great Lakes regions and eventually into the Northeast on 5/31. Several states saw wind gusts over 100 mph and millions of dollars in damage was left behind.
