An incredibly well-studied F5 struck Jordan, Iowa, Almost every structure in the village was leveled. Dr. Fujita described it as one of the most intense twisters he ever examined. Dr. Fujita was the developer of the “F Scale” and the back bone of the more recent “EF Scale” that measures tornado intensity. The wedge had an anti-cyclonic F3 satellite during its lifetime as well. The Jordan tornado was part of a larger outbreak of 16 tornadoes that impacted the Midwest (plus TX and WY where isolated F0s occurred). Notably, a devastating F4 slammed the Chicago metro. Several communities, mainly Lemont, were heavily impacted with many homes left in ruins.
