The City of Sedalia has named Matthew Wirt as its new City Administrator, effective immediately following City Council’s approval of his contract in closed session Monday night.
Wirt, a lifelong Pettis County resident, brings more than 25 years of service to the City of Sedalia. He most recently served as Assistant City Administrator, following more than five years as Chief of Police. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated strong leadership, operational expertise, and a steadfast commitment to public service and community safety.
“Matthew is a natural leader who combines strength with compassion and unwavering integrity,” said Mayor Andrew Dawson. “He has a deep commitment to the people of Sedalia and understands the needs of our community. We are confident he will work effectively with City Council to carry out its policies and priorities while ensuring that daily operations run smoothly and responsibly.”
As City Administrator, Wirt will oversee all municipal departments and operations, manage the annual budget, and ensure that the vision and policies established by the City Council are implemented effectively. His appointment follows a thorough and community-focused interview process that included department tours, public presentations, and extensive engagement with City leadership and residents.
“Serving the City of Sedalia in this role is an incredible honor,” Wirt said. “I look forward to continuing to work with our outstanding City staff, Council members, and the entire community to build on our successes and maintain a positive, solutions-focused approach in all that we do.”
At this time, the City does not plan to fill the Assistant City Administrator position.
Wirt’s deep ties to Sedalia date back to childhood, when his family moved to the city for employment with Rival Manufacturing. He grew up working alongside his father on mechanical and carpentry projects and gained hands-on experience on cattle farms and in construction—experiences that shaped his strong work ethic and practical problem-solving skills.
He holds a bachelor’s degree and has completed advanced leadership training, including Command School at Northwestern University and the West Point Leadership Academy, along with extensive specialized law enforcement education.
Outside of work, Wirt owns and operates a small farm where he raises hay for horses and other animals. He has been married for 25 years and is the proud father of two children, along with three dogs. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast who has been riding for 37 years, he now enjoys sharing that passion with his son.
Please join us in congratulating Matthew Wirt on his new role as City Administrator, and in supporting him as he helps lead our community with professionalism, collaboration, and positivity.
