The LRC has been predicting a huge uptick in Tropical systems from now through the end of the month. Current long range models are just now picking up the potential waves coming from Africa that could develop. This day in 1899, Puerto Rico was slammed by a powerful Category 4 hurricane. The storm killed at least 3,000 people in the territory and laid waste to many communities. Up to 23″ of rain reportedly fell in 24 hours. The hurricane is the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane on record. Even though tropical storms/hurricanes typically do not directly affect us here in WCMO, they do influence and affects our weather patterns. A hurricane on the East Coast can serve as a “block” for any systems to move across the country west to east . If we are in a wet period, it could keep storm systems on top of us for several days. If we are in a dry period, we could remain dry for several days to weeks.
