COLUMBIA, Mo. — As Missouri farmers and farm families plan for 2026, including health insurance and childcare in their farm plans and budgets is essential. A new University of Missouri Extension program, Whole Farm Family Planning for the 21st Century, helps farmers make informed choices tailored to their unique farm and family needs.
“Health insurance and childcare options are essential considerations for farm and rural families, whether it’s young folks returning to the farm or older farmers navigating their senior years,” said Amie Breshears, MU Extension field specialist in agricultural business and program co-presenter. “This program helps farmers understand the options and implement solutions that work for them.”
Jake Hefley, MU Extension field specialist and program co-presenter, noted that health insurance plans and premiums can change regularly, making it important for farmers to stay informed. “Childcare can also be hard to find, especially in rural communities, so families benefit from thinking ahead and exploring available options,” he said. Staying current on coverage and proactively considering childcare supports stronger long-term risk management.
The program consists of two free virtual sessions; each held from noon to 1 p.m.:
- January 20 – Childcare: Covers how childcare affects labor and safety, where childcare costs fit in the budget, and practical childcare options for farm families. Ideal for those with or planning for children.
- January 22 – Health Insurance: Covers how health insurance supports risk management, budgeting for coverage, and options suited to variable farm income. Ideal for farmers reviewing insurance or planning for family changes.
Participants may register for one or both sessions.
“These informal, interactive programs provide valuable information and resources and offer opportunities to connect with others facing similar challenges,” Breshears said. “They are open to all.”
