A Clinton man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges following an alleged attempted arson and altercation at a local business earlier this week.
According to a probable cause statement filed in Henry County Circuit Court, officers were dispatched on March 17 to a report of an attempted arson and an assault in progress involving Richard Holstein.
Authorities say a responding officer located Holstein on the ground engaged in a physical struggle with another individual outside the business. During the encounter, officers attempted to place Holstein in handcuffs, but he allegedly failed to comply with commands and continued to resist efforts to restrain him.
Investigators report that a witness observed Holstein light a cigarette and then ignite a cardboard box near the entrance of the business. A confrontation followed, during which a second individual reportedly told Holstein to stop before the situation escalated into a physical altercation.
Police say officers eventually used pepper spray before taking Holstein into custody. The business owner later indicated a desire to pursue charges.
Holstein has been charged with attempted arson in the first degree, assault in the fourth degree, and resisting or interfering with arrest for a felony. The case remains under investigation.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
