JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Senator Rick Brattin says lawmakers are moving quickly through the legislative session, pointing to key progress this week on tax reform and public policy priorities.
In an update from the Capitol, Brattin said the pace of work has accelerated as the session continues, with lawmakers focusing on issues impacting working Missourians.
A major development came late Wednesday night, when the Missouri Senate passed House Joint Resolutions 173 and 174—measures aimed at eliminating the state income tax. Brattin voiced strong support for the proposal, calling income tax a burden on productivity.
He said the tax system currently penalizes those who work more or try to grow their income, adding that Missouri should instead adopt policies that encourage economic growth. Brattin pointed to states like Florida as examples of economies that have benefited from eliminating income tax, citing increased job growth, population gains, and investment.
In addition to tax reform, Brattin said he successfully passed an amendment focused on strengthening school safety, giving schools more authority to protect students.
He also noted progress in the Missouri House on legislation designed to prioritize citizens when it comes to public assistance programs.
Brattin says lawmakers will continue working through the session to advance policies aimed at economic growth and public safety.
