A Clinton woman is facing serious charges after a disturbing case of child abuse was uncovered last month, involving a 4-year-old boy found severely underweight and covered in bruises.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Clinton Police Corporal Violet Eubanks, Patricia Lee Siercks has been charged with abuse or neglect of a child stemming from incidents that occurred on or about June 17, 2025, at a private residence in Clinton.
The investigation began when officers were called to Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, where medical staff reported bruising on the child’s face and back. The victim, described as 4 years old and non-verbal, was found with visible injuries including bruising to both temples, a scratch under his left eye, and other markings consistent with abuse.
Growth records showed the child had experienced significant weight loss between March and June of this year, falling far below normal percentiles for his age. A social worker at Children’s Mercy Hospital reported that the child had been diagnosed with Refeeding Syndrome — a potentially fatal condition caused by sudden nutritional intake after starvation. Medical professionals warned that the syndrome can lead to multi-organ failure and even death if not treated properly.
During questioning, Siercks admitted to spending over $400 monthly on food, claiming the child was “picky.” She admitted to no longer providing him with nutritional supplements after November 2024. Siercks also confessed to slapping the child across the face with both hands during a moment of frustration, and further stated that bruises on the right side of his face were caused when he fell over a toy.
Authorities say the case is a clear example of long-term neglect and physical abuse. Clinton Police Sergeant Michael Nelson and Children’s Mercy Social Worker Rachel Neihart were among those involved in the response and diagnosis.
Siercks remains in custody, and further legal proceedings are expected in Henry County Circuit Court. The investigation is ongoing.
