A second individual has been arrested in connection with the disturbing child abuse case that first made headlines earlier this week. The Clinton Police Department has charged Joshua Gusman following an investigation into a severely malnourished and injured child, previously reported in the arrest of Patricia Siercks, as covered by KDKD on July 2.

According to a newly released probable cause statement filed by Officer Kameren Huffman, Gusman is now facing charges related to the long-term abuse of his own biological child, who was hospitalized at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital on June 17, 2025, and later transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City due to the severity of injuries and malnutrition.

The statement reveals a harrowing timeline of neglect and physical abuse. Medical personnel noted severe bruising on the child’s face, significant weight loss, and signs of refeeding syndrome — a potentially fatal condition that arises when nourishment is reintroduced after prolonged starvation. At just four years old, the child weighed only 22 pounds, far below a healthy range for his age.

Investigators reported the child suffered injuries consistent with being slapped and punched in the face. Gusman allegedly admitted that he would hear the abuse from another room and would only intervene “to stop it.” The document also indicates that Gusman had been aware of the abuse for at least two years but failed to report or prevent it.

The report further details that Gusman and Siercks, who live together, are both biological parents of the victim. Siercks was previously charged with felony abuse or neglect of a child, and now Gusman faces similar charges following the findings.

Medical experts at Children’s Mercy diagnosed the child with symptoms indicating “acute childhood torture,” prolonged starvation, and growth stunting. They stated the child was within days of experiencing total organ failure when admitted.

The Clinton Police Department, in coordination with Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Children’s Division, and Children’s Mercy staff, continue to investigate the case. Both suspects remain in custody as the Henry County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office pursues charges.

This incident has sparked concern throughout the Clinton community, prompting calls for increased awareness and intervention in cases of suspected child abuse.
