On August 31st, communities worldwide observe International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), a global campaign focused on ending overdose, remembering those lost, supporting grieving families and friends, and stimulating action and discussion around evidence-based prevention and drug policy. This year, Celebrate Recovery is hosting a 4th Annual Candlelight Vigil to honor those we have lost in our community and to raise awareness about this pressing issue.

Date: August 31, 2025
Time: 7 pm
Location: Downtown Clinton Square
Details:  Our candlelight vigil will include Music from the Kingdom Fighters,  speakers sharing personal stories of loss and recovery, and community   resources will be available on prevention and treatment, as well as a remembrance roll call of those lost during the candle lighting

Drug overdose deaths have significantly impacted families and communities nationwide, including here in Henry County. For instance, Missouri ranked 32nd among all states for drug overdose death rates in 2022, with overdose being the #1 leading cause of death among adults aged 18-44. In 2023, approximately 105,000 people died from drug overdoses in the United States, according to the CDC. In Missouri, there were 1,948 overdose deaths in 2023, with 73% linked to opioids, notes the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. These statistics underscore the critical importance of raising awareness and promoting effective prevention and treatment strategies. (See attached for more information and facts.)

Increased media attention can play a vital role in de-stigmatizing substance use disorders, promoting open conversations about prevention and recovery, and mobilizing our community to act. We invite you to cover this event and help us shed light on the local impact of the overdose crisis, highlight stories of resilience, and inform the public about available resources and pathways to recovery.
