Respect MO Voters town hall will educate fellow residents on how to defend the century-old freedom of Missouri’s citizen initiative

Sedalia —Sedalia residents with Respect MO Voters are planning a town hall on Tuesday, February 10 about how Missouri’s citizen ballot initiative process works, and how citizens can stop politicians from attacking this century-old freedom.

Residents feel that Missouri politicians have disrespected voters.  Several times in recent years the Missouri legislature has deceived voters with confusing ballot language and overturned election results.

For example, in 2018 a 57.8% majority of Pettis County residents along with a majority of residents in Henry, Johnson, Benton and 73 other counties voted to pass the “Clean Missouri” Amendment 1 for ethics and redistricting reforms.  Ignoring a 62% statewide majority “Yes” vote, legislators gutted these reforms by placing the issues back on the ballot with language that was found to be illegally deceptive.

“It’s crucial that politicians respect our right to initiate petitions to amend the Missouri Constitution and prevent elected officials from overturning a majority vote of the people,” said Sandy Terrell, a volunteer in Sedalia with Respect MO Voters. “Everyone is encouraged to come learn how to protect your freedom with Respect MO Voters this Tuesday at the Heckart Community Center in Sedalia.”

Now, over 1,250 volunteers have gathered over 130,000 signatures for the Respect MO Voters Amendment, which would:

  • Require ballot summaries to be clear, unbiased, fair, accurate, and easy to understand so voters understand what they’re voting on.

  • Defend Missourians’ century-old freedom of the initiative process by prohibiting the legislature from making it more difficult to gather signatures or pass initiatives at the ballot box.

  • Prohibit the legislature from overturning or changing initiatives passed by voters unless an 80% bipartisan supermajority sends changes to voters to approve.

After the presentation there will be a question-and-answer session, an opportunity to sign the Respect MO Voters petition, and the opportunity to volunteer.

Participants interested in volunteering to collect signatures can stay for a training to leave fully prepared with the knowledge, tools, and materials needed to begin collecting petition signatures in their communities. Participants who would like to gather signatures  are asked to arrive promptly in order to take part in the full program and receive complete training and materials.
