As Memorial Day weekend approaches, state officials are urging drivers to slow down, stay alert, and plan ahead for one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The Missouri Department of Transportation and the Missouri State Highway Patrol say thousands of Missourians are expected to hit the road for holiday gatherings, lake trips, and vacations over the upcoming weekend. Officials are reminding drivers that increased traffic and active construction zones could lead to delays on major highways across the state.

MoDOT crews will continue working to improve Missouri roads, but officials say many projects will be paused or reduced over the holiday weekend when possible to help ease congestion. Drivers are still encouraged to use caution in work zones and watch for workers, changing traffic patterns, and reduced speeds.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is also preparing for increased enforcement during the holiday travel period. Troopers will be watching for speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and seat belt violations. Drivers are reminded to buckle up, avoid texting while driving, and never get behind the wheel impaired.

Officials also encourage motorists to check traffic conditions before traveling, allow extra travel time, and make sure vehicles are road-ready before leaving home.

Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the beginning of the summer travel season, and transportation leaders say a little preparation and patience can help keep Missouri roads safe for everyone.
